Language and literature This fortnight, we were determined to get good grades in our formative assessment. We practiced how to organize our thoughts before writing the final task. We worked even harder than pirates in hunt of treasure and applauded ourselves for performing better than before. We offered credit to novelist Gustav Freytag for helping us to plot our story on the “Freytag’s Pyramid”.

The highlight of the week was the theatrical presentation of Korean Folk Tales where the actors regaled us with 3 different stories. We were fascinated to see how one person played multiple roles with minimal use of props.

We enjoyed an activity on finding synonyms for various commonly used words, like ‘said’, ‘ask’, ‘awesome’ etc, to increase our vocabulary. We also performed an activity on finding the similarities between our two IDU subjects- Individuals and Societies and Language and Literature. After this, we practiced letter writing skills in class.

Math Last fortnight, we have been focusing on the concept of angles. We learnt how to bisect an angle and find a missing angle, explored more about different types of angles and also learnt about the angle sum property of a triangle and a quadrilateral. We did an angle crossword and tried to find angles in the letters of our name which was a lot of fun. We also took a formative assessment for the unit in which we made an ” angular rangoli” in pairs.

Physics

As we began UNIT-2, on Light and listed the various sources of light and categorized them as artificial and natural sources. We watched a video to understand the path of light waves. We did some activities which explained us what happens when light travels from one medium to another. We used water in a beaker, paper slips, pencil and glass slab to conduct the activities to understand the concept of refraction. We found the activities were very interesting and exciting.

Chemistry

Last week, in Chemistry, we learnt about Absolute Zero, which was a very interesting topic since most of us had never heard about it. We were all astonished, imagining if absolute zero existed at a natural site, how cold it must be!!

We also had our second formative assessment wherein it was a revision of some of the concepts we have learnt uphill now. We discussed the paper and did the corrections.

Even our new unit started this week! It’s about ‘atoms’ and I’m sure everyone is exited to learn about atoms since everything is made of atoms. We were introduced to the new unit by finishing an interesting and new style of reflection about the old unit.  We guessed the global context for the unit and discussed the key concept, related concept, statement of inquiry and the inquiry questions.

Individuals & societies We discussed and compared various aspects of ancient civilizations and how they flourished around a water body. We started inquiring about the silk route and the trade of silk along with other goods. We understood that apart from goods and commodities, even cultures and ideas were exchanged.

Language and literature We read three stories from different parts of the world namely Philippines, Ireland and Poland. We practiced writing internal monologues of various characters by using direct evidence from the stories and also by using indirect references that challenged our imagination and creativity. We made a deliberate effort at using a variety of verbs in lieu of ‘said’ and ‘asked’. We also observed the similarities across folktales, working on the premise that at the very core, the morals and themes remain the same

We are now revisiting the skill of letter writing and have practiced one informal letter where we assumed the role of one of the primary characters in a story. We employed empathy in order to relate to how the character would have felt and how he/she would have reacted to a given situation.

Math We have reached the end of our unit “number system”.

We discussed how to differentiate between prime & composite numbers and factors & multiples. We also learnt how to make a factor tree. We revised the concepts of HCF and LCM and learnt these using examples from real life and by watching a related video.

Science Biology

We watched a video on plant and animal cell and compared the two by drawing a Venn diagram, showing its comparison. We also did a practical on identifying the different parts of microscopes. We learned how to focus the microscope and the role of diaphragm and the mirror when focusing the slides.

Chemistry

We noted our observations on the laboratory thermometer. We learnt the working of the thermometer and completed the activity sheet. We observed and compared the movement of particles in cold and hot water and completed an activity sheet based on the same. We took our formative assessment, which was a cut and paste activity, on changes of states of matter.

Physics

In continuation to fundamental and SI units, we learned what derived units are and why we need them. We also practiced unit conversion of 5 basic physical quantities – Length, mass, volume, time and temperature (conversion of degree Celsius into degree Fahrenheit) .

Individuals & societies We started working on the need and importance of conserving monuments by brainstorming the ideas in a group discussion. We determined our role in conserving these monuments. We also attempted to construct the meaning of tangible and intangible cultural heritage.

Spanish

We described our favorite famous personalities in Spanish. We also learnt family tree in Spanish and described each member of the family using the verbs “Ser, tener and llevar”.

French

During this week, we have done a lot of interactive activities. Firstly, we did an activity to learn classroom instructions in which we were paired into groups and were asked to draw scenes from real classroom situations where classroom instructions are utilized. We used as many instructions as we could in our pictures which was really helpful as we learnt the spellings. Afterwards, we practiced for our Formative Assessment by doing listening activities, worksheets on concepts of presenting yourself, asking name, age, profession, nationality, etc., and filling personal details in an identity card. We also discussed our homework and this prepared us better for the FA which happened in this week.

Language and literature

We explored the five elements of a story extensively. We have distinguished between the theme and moral of a story. In one activity, we were given a picture prompt, and in another task, a setting, characters and a theme around which we created original stories that also had to have a moral. After seeing a video of a Jataka Tale, we determined its theme and identified all the other elements of a story.

We have been brushing up basic grammar concepts as this unit progresses.

Math We explored some more properties of numbers moving ahead in our unit of Number System. We learnt how to express numbers using index notation for which we also did a doodle sheet. We further learnt about BEDMAS wherein we learnt the correct order of operation on numbers. We also did a group activity and learned about a lot of other number systems.
